The availability of family planning services allows individuals to achieve desired birth spacing and family size, and contributes to improved health outcomes for infants, children, women, and families. Abstinence from sexual activity is the only 100% effective way to avoid unintended pregnancy. For individuals who are sexually active, correct and consistent contraceptive use is highly effective at preventing unintended pregnancy. Unintended pregnancies include pregnancies that are reported by women as being mistimed or unwanted. Unintended pregnancies are associated with many negative health and economic consequences.
Births resulting from unintended pregnancies can have negative consequences including birth defects and low birth weight. Children from unintended pregnancies are more likely to experience poor mental and physical health during childhood, and have lower educational attainment and more behavioural issues in their teen years.
Your choice of a birth control method depends on a number of factors, including your health, how often you have sex, and whether or not you want children.
Considering necessary age difference in children, financial conditions, consent of father and mother of the child etc. certain methodologies are developed to help the same. We put in all our efforts to ensure efficient results. We provide a better understanding of the whole concept of family planning and how it can be done. The result is that no one remains unaware of the needs and benefits of family planning. We also focus on ways to make the people more aware. We can be of great help in keeping unwanted pregnancy far away resulting in a well-planned family or idea of family planning.
Every pregnancy should be a wanted pregnancy and therefore it should be a planned pregnancy. It is imperative then to ensure use of a contraceptive that suits the need of the couple. In present times there is a wide range of options available in the basket of contraceptives. There are temporary methods i.e. reversible and permanent methods i.e. irreversible. Permanent methods are used when child bearing is no longer desired.
Women can choose from many different types of birth control methods. These include, in order of most effective to least effective at preventing pregnancy:
Natural family planning is a form of birth control that doesn't involve pills or devices. As a result, you don't have side effects. With these methods, you track your fertility, which is when you are most likely to get pregnant. Usually, a woman releases an egg from her ovaries at about the same time each month. That’s called ovulation. The egg moves through the fallopian tubes toward the uterus. An unfertilized egg can live up to 24 hours. Natural family planning uses different methods to pinpoint those fertility days. Natural family planning isn't as effective as other methods of birth control. According to the CDC, the failure rate is 24%. That means about 1 in 4 women who use natural family planning will get pregnant. You need to be careful, diligent, and have plenty of self-control to practice natural family planning. You have to follow instructions completely to be successful. Natural family planning requires you to keep track of your body and stick to a schedule. It may not be for you if you have irregular periods or if you are breastfeeding.
Talk to your doctor if you have questions about these methods or to see if natural family planning might work for you.
Pills that can prevent the occurrence of a pregnancy are called as contraceptive pills. These are also called as birth control pills. The pills are said to contain two hormones estrogen and progestin that manages the unwanted child birth. The combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP) have been around for decades and they have undergone numerous developments. From standard dose pills we have moved to the ultra low dose pills, which have minimal or negligible side effects. Dr. Shweta prescribes the contraceptive after considering the patient’s reason and health. The contraceptive pills need to be taken from the first day of the period and are to be continued everyday on the same time. The COCP have many benefits over and above providing contraception.
The use of COCP has been clouded with many myths. These myths can be addressed during a consultation and we can help you to choose a pill appropriate to your needs For women who cannot take estrogen containing pills can use progesterone only pills. They are particularly useful in women who are breast-feeding.
Intrauterine Contraceptive Device as we can call it is the coil like device which is T-shaped. It is inserted in the women’s uterus to control the unwanted pregnancy. Use of intrauterine device is safe and effective. Intrauterine devices are ideal for spacing and when long-term contraception is required. IUDs are safe and work well. Fewer than 1 out of 100 women per year will get pregnant using an IUD.
It actually thickens the mucus on the cervix thereby blocking the sperms. The hormones in the IUD’s stop the eggs to leave ovaries. Hence, there will be no egg to fertilize with the sperms. This can help in preventing the pregnancy. They are easily inserted in the outpatient clinic and there is no need of any anaesthesia. They are effective immediately from the time of insertion. They are effective for as long as 5 to 10 years and once removed, fertility returns at once. The doctor uses a speculum in vagina and then inserts IUD through the cervix opening into the uterus. The process duration is of less than 5 minutes. We have the copper containing and the levonorgestrel releasing intra-uterine system. IUDs that release progestin may be for treating heavy menstrual bleeding and reducing cramps.
Another method to prevent conception of a child or pregnancy is use of injections for family planning. Progestin injections, such as Depo-Provera, that are given into the muscles of the upper arm or buttocks once every 3 months. Often the injection is given to the females after the first 5 days of the normal menstruation. And once the patient changes mind to conceive, they need to stop it months in advance.
A very commonly practiced birth control measure is called sterilization.
These methods are best for men, women, and couples who feel certain they do not want to have children in the future. For men it is referred to as Vasectomy and for females it is tubal ligation. These procedures can sometimes be reversed if a pregnancy is desired at a later time. However, the success rate for reversal is not high. Through the Key-hole surgery, the fallopian tubes are clipped to block the meeting of a sperm and an egg. In comparison to both, Vasectomy is an easier procedure as it is performed outside the abdomen. Dr. Shweta states that she promotes Vasectomy as it is less risky and effective than tubal ligation. This birth control or prevention procedure is cheap also in men.
Emergency contraceptive pills are not an alternative to regular contraception but an emergency measure, which can prevent an unwanted pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. They are safe effective and available over the counter. The common one available is marketed as two tablets each containing 75 mcg of Levonorgestrel. The first tablet is taken within 72 hrs of unprotected intercourse and the second one is taken after 12 hours of the first tablet. Pill 72 is now a single does tablet to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, but within 72 hours.
